Manhole Explosions Part 2: How to Stop Them

Manhole explosions are a nightmare for the public and manhole owners. Unpredictability, life-threatening potential, and the setting in crowded urban areas, make manhole explosions particularity pernicious. Part I of this presentation cataloged the fundamental causes of manhole fires and explosions in duct-manhole systems whether they are fueled with electrical energy, chemical energy, or both. In this Part II the presenter describes how to stop manhole explosions from occurring.

Glen J. Bertini is the President, CEO, and Chairman of Novinium, Inc. He has spent over three decades working with technolo-gy to extend the life and improve the safety of underground distribution equipment. In Mr. Bertini’s early career at Dow, Glen provided expertise in explosion prevention technology. Mr. Bertini has over 60 articles published and holds a total of 31 patents on cable rejuvenation and explosion prevention with more pending. Mr. Bertini holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Senior member of the ICC, a Senior Member of the AIChE, and a licensed professional engineer (MI).
