"And so when an explosion occurs, a 250-lb. manhole cover can get blown up into the air, land on top of a building, on top of a car, or on top of a human being."

Why PreVent®

An estimated 11 manhole events happen every day across North America. These smoking manholes, manhole fires, and manhole explosions are increasing as utility infrastructure ages, causing significant network damage and costly outages. A single manhole explosion can cost a utility more than $1Million.

Impact on Utilities

Direct Cost:

Indirect Cost:

Although the combined costs impact utilities’ staffing and budgetary resources, the degration in public perception harms the brand, which can be difficult to regain over the long term.

Current Approach

Some utilities have tried vented manhole covers only to see their problems increase as damaging water flows into underground structures. Other utilities seek to minimize damages from a manhole event by securing or tethering their manhole covers. However, these solutions fail to address the root causes of manhole events. Typically, manhole events are a result of a chemical explosion caused by deteriorating underground cables in vault environments where saltwater and debris accumulate. Locked or tethered manhole covers do not stop these events from happening.

Stopping Manhole Events Before They Happen

PreVent® is a holistic smart solution designed to help utilities protect people and property from dangerous manhole events. PreVent® patent pending technology improves public safety and network reliability by actively stopping manhole events from occurring. Our cloud-based wirelessly connected design monitors the accumulation of combustible gases, reducing the risk associated with secondary cable failure, and provides data analytics for smart asset management.

“While others address the question of how to keep manhole covers from going airborne during a manhole event, we challenged ourselves to prevent manhole events in the first place. PreVent hatched from that simple vision.”
